Sex Drive - Oddly… not as bad as you might think

Don’t get me wrong… ‘Sex Drive’ is no classic, nor will it have you laughing every minute of the (quite long – 1h 44min) runtime. However, it may never attain to the heights of originality that were displayed in the (far superior) ‘American Pie’ franchise, but it's still quite reasonable fun when it comes to the exploits of horny teenagers.

It’s about your average geeky guy and his attempt at going on a road trip across America with the prospect of… well, getting ‘friendly’ with a young lady who's he's met on the internet. What follows is basically one awkward (and normally sexual) scenario after then next. These pass as a ‘story’ as they get closer and closer to their overall destination during the road trip that is 'Sex Drive.'

I describe the main character as 'average' and 'average' he is.  In fact... without being too harsh on the young actor, he's probably the most 'average' leading man you've ever seen.  In most teen comedies the cast looks like they're fresh off a cat-walk, but here they (and when I say 'they' I mainly mean the male cast-members!) are definitely not going to win any modelling contracts!

Along the way they bump into what seems like one cameo after the next, all of which are recognisable faces (perhaps the most famous of which is Seth Green) and each props up the story when things need an extra laugh here and there.

Yes, it’s hardly Shakespeare, but there were a decent enough amount of ‘laugh out loud’ moments. For me these mainly came from people falling over or hurting themselves (believe it or not… I do also like intelligent comedy as well, but the 'prat-falls' on display here were well done and came at exactly the right time). I suppose this confirms that ‘Sex Drive’ is ‘low-brow’ humour at best. However, if you know what you’re getting and are in the mood for an 'American Pie-like' teen comedy which, although doesn’t cover any new ground, will at least keep you entertained for a while, then this one is worth a look.  You can definitely wander out halfway through to get a cup of tea and come back without really missing that much.

7/10 if I woke up on Groundhog Day and had to watch this again, I could live with that
