Honeymooon - Just don’t get married in the first place

‘Honeymoon’ is a ‘low-budgeter.’ The first thing you need to know is that its cast is pretty minimal.  The honeymooning couple in the title are basically all you get from the film.  They’re a young pair who, after getting married, go on honeymoon to a cabin by a lake in Canada.  Sadly, they don’t even get the – apparently standard – seven years before the ‘itch’ comes along.  They barely get seven minutes before things start going a little off centre.

Again, the lack of budget means that there aren’t any monsters knocking at their door.  Instead, we have more psychological horror elements here as the couple start behaving strangely and one thing leads to another.  There are a couple of secondary characters here (and I do mean ‘couple’) and they go some way to throw a few red herrings into the mix.  But it’s 99% just the two honeymooners who carry the film and, despite them both being British, manage not only to do it, but also to keep their adopted American accent up reasonably well.

If you’re in the mood for something face-paced and gory, you probably won’t get much out of it.  It’s definitely a ‘slow burner.’ And there’s a fair bit that will be left up to your imagination.  Not everything is particularly clear as to why it’s happening.  You’ll be left with a claustrophobic little number which leaves a lot out.  There is one quite gory moment towards the end and some of the make-up is also decent, but, overall, it’s one of those films that you really have to know what you’re getting before you watch it.  It’s marketed as a ‘horror’ and, yes, it does just about warrant that tag.  However, if you’re expecting ‘monster-horror’ or ‘action-horror’ then you’ll be sorely disappointed.

I thought it was okay, but the lack of real story (just two people arguing with each other and getting slowly more and more paranoid) meant that I should remember it well enough to probably not bother sitting through it again.  However, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been and the acting and dialogue was reasonable enough to make it not a complete waste of my time.

6/10 Should probably keep you awake if Freddy Krueger was haunting your nights
